Bee Stamps

Did you know that Honey Bees are assigned jobs based on their age? For instance, for the worker bee:
1-2 days old: spend their time cleaning cells, starting with the one they were born in, and keeping the brood warm.

3-5 days old: they feed older larvae

6-11 days old: they feed the youngest larvae

12-17 days old: they produce wax, build combs, carry food, and perform undertaker duties

18-21 days old: they perform guard duty, protecting the hive entrance

22 days on until their death at around 40-45 days: they fly from the hive collecting pollen, nectar, water, pollinating plants, etc.

Maxim Cards on Endemic Species

These are maxim cards personally designed by Boben John Emanuel of India. The stamps were issued on October 16, 2012 depicting the Endemic Species of Indian Biodiversity Hotspots.The venated gliding frog, hoolock gibbon, bugun liocichla, and nicobar megapode are the celebrated species peculiar only to particular localities or regions in India.

The Vanated Gliding Frog has a face value of 500 paise. The specie is said to be restricted in Indira Gandhi National Park.

The Hoolock Gibbon stamps has face value of 500 paise. The hoolock gibbons (Hoolock) are also known as langoor. In northeast India, the hoolock is found south of Brahmaputra and east of the Dibang Rivers. Its range extends into seven states covering Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura(The Seven Sisters).

Bugun Liocichla stamp has face value of 2500 paise. The Bugun Liocichla was first spotted in 1995, it was described as a new species in 2006. It was discovered in Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh, India, by an astrophysicist, Ramana Athreya.



















Nicobar Megapode or Nicobar Scrubfowl can be found in some of the Nicobar Islands (India). The specie is now vulnerable to extinction due to hunting. The 2004 tsunami is believed to have wiped out populations on some islands and reduced populations on several others.

Stamp Covers

Few days ago, I got the chance to view some of Jahfer Stamps' covers collection posted on his facebook. The stamps on the covers are simply interesting.

Jahfer is from India but has moved to Dubai for work. He started into this hobby 15 years ago and has been very fortunate to have honest trade partners and an access to a wider selection of stamps worldwide. He even exhibited his stamp collection when he was still on the 10th grade. How cool is that? He got more than 600 covers now on his collection. 

Since they're just too many, I have only selected 4 covers with really amusing details.

On this cover from Taiwan you probably first noticed this eye-catchy crab stamps. These stamps are actually one of the 4-stamp set issued by Chungwha Post last April 15, 2010. The stamps were issue to create an awareness on the existence and importance of Taiwan's marine life. 

The crab on the stamp is a Scandarma lintou, an excellent tree climber. You may also find some crab stamps here: crab stamps.

This stamp cover from Brunie contains wild orchids stamps which is part of  Wild Orchids of Brunie Darussalam Series-2 issue on 2009.

Better-known for diverse culture and booming tourism, Tourism Malaysia has hailed 2007 as the Visit Malaysia Year 2007 with deals from Manchester United and Chelsea F.C. for promotion. On March 19, 2007, a 4-stamp set was issued to showcase Malaysia's beautiful landscapes, and colourful cultures.

Canada's stamps are always amazing! The definitive stamps features the following beneficial insects: the paper wasp (Polistes fuscatus), the assassin bug (Zelus luridus), the large milkweed bug (Oncopeltus fasciatus), the margined leatherwing (Chauliognathus marginatus) and the dogbane beetle (Chrysochus auratus). The stamps were issues on October 19, 2010.
