African Bat Stamp

Last 2001 (I'm so irritated I don't know the exact date), the post office of South Africa released 10 bats stamps featuring endemic bats of Africa. Unfortunately for me (which happens almost every time) got only 1 out of the 10 stamps. But I'm still glad I got a mint one.

The stamps that I have portraits a cape horseshoe bat. According to my google 'research', these little things can be found along the coastlines of Southern Africa. They live in caves near the coasts. It is endemic in South Africa. It has been called a horseshoe bat because of the marking around its nose similar to a horseshoe.

I feel so smart when I wrote this blog. lol.

Bee Stamps

Did you know that Honey Bees are assigned jobs based on their age? For instance, for the worker bee:
1-2 days old: spend their time cleaning cells, starting with the one they were born in, and keeping the brood warm.

3-5 days old: they feed older larvae

6-11 days old: they feed the youngest larvae

12-17 days old: they produce wax, build combs, carry food, and perform undertaker duties

18-21 days old: they perform guard duty, protecting the hive entrance

22 days on until their death at around 40-45 days: they fly from the hive collecting pollen, nectar, water, pollinating plants, etc.

Maxim Cards on Endemic Species

These are maxim cards personally designed by Boben John Emanuel of India. The stamps were issued on October 16, 2012 depicting the Endemic Species of Indian Biodiversity Hotspots.The venated gliding frog, hoolock gibbon, bugun liocichla, and nicobar megapode are the celebrated species peculiar only to particular localities or regions in India.

The Vanated Gliding Frog has a face value of 500 paise. The specie is said to be restricted in Indira Gandhi National Park.

The Hoolock Gibbon stamps has face value of 500 paise. The hoolock gibbons (Hoolock) are also known as langoor. In northeast India, the hoolock is found south of Brahmaputra and east of the Dibang Rivers. Its range extends into seven states covering Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura(The Seven Sisters).

Bugun Liocichla stamp has face value of 2500 paise. The Bugun Liocichla was first spotted in 1995, it was described as a new species in 2006. It was discovered in Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh, India, by an astrophysicist, Ramana Athreya.



















Nicobar Megapode or Nicobar Scrubfowl can be found in some of the Nicobar Islands (India). The specie is now vulnerable to extinction due to hunting. The 2004 tsunami is believed to have wiped out populations on some islands and reduced populations on several others.

Stamp Covers

Few days ago, I got the chance to view some of Jahfer Stamps' covers collection posted on his facebook. The stamps on the covers are simply interesting.

Jahfer is from India but has moved to Dubai for work. He started into this hobby 15 years ago and has been very fortunate to have honest trade partners and an access to a wider selection of stamps worldwide. He even exhibited his stamp collection when he was still on the 10th grade. How cool is that? He got more than 600 covers now on his collection. 

Since they're just too many, I have only selected 4 covers with really amusing details.

On this cover from Taiwan you probably first noticed this eye-catchy crab stamps. These stamps are actually one of the 4-stamp set issued by Chungwha Post last April 15, 2010. The stamps were issue to create an awareness on the existence and importance of Taiwan's marine life. 

The crab on the stamp is a Scandarma lintou, an excellent tree climber. You may also find some crab stamps here: crab stamps.

This stamp cover from Brunie contains wild orchids stamps which is part of  Wild Orchids of Brunie Darussalam Series-2 issue on 2009.

Better-known for diverse culture and booming tourism, Tourism Malaysia has hailed 2007 as the Visit Malaysia Year 2007 with deals from Manchester United and Chelsea F.C. for promotion. On March 19, 2007, a 4-stamp set was issued to showcase Malaysia's beautiful landscapes, and colourful cultures.

Canada's stamps are always amazing! The definitive stamps features the following beneficial insects: the paper wasp (Polistes fuscatus), the assassin bug (Zelus luridus), the large milkweed bug (Oncopeltus fasciatus), the margined leatherwing (Chauliognathus marginatus) and the dogbane beetle (Chrysochus auratus). The stamps were issues on October 19, 2010.

Dogs Stamps

Dogs are man's best friend and this is known to all dog lovers. They are probably the friendliest and most playful creatures on earth. They are good companions and very loyal. I really love dogs and for me they're not just pets, they're friends. And because I love these cute friends of mine, Im posting few of my dog stamps on this blog!

New Zealand's Health stamps on 1982 picture dogs of 3 kinds (Labrador, Border Collie, and Cocker Spaniel). Unfortunately, I got only 2 out of 3. 2 cents of the stamp's value goes to NZ's health services.

Le chiot is a French phrase for "the puppy". On 2006 France has issued a set of 4 pieces stamps entitled Young Animals. The set contains the puppy, the kitten, the ponny, and the lamb. I got only the puppy though.

Beagles! They reminded me of Shoeshine from the 2007 movie Underdog based on an American TV series by W. Watts Biggers. Shoeshine is a beagle who can fly and has super canine strength! Anyways, the post office of Benin issued a set of 7 stamps of dogs on August 23, 1995. The dogs featured are: German Shepherd, Beagle, Great Dane, Boxer, Pointer, Fox Terrier, and Schnauzer. I got only 4. :( You can see the stamps on Scott Catalogue: Benin #741-747.

Just recently I came across to one of my facebook friend's cover collection. This cover is owned by Boben John Emanuel from India.Boben also got a good collection of insect stamps in covers which we will be sharing on our next post.

This is Trixie. She is a 5-month old Labrador Retriever. Trixie has been with our family ever since she was little. We used to have her inside the house 'till she grew so fast that we can no longer manage having a four-legged giant running inside the house. She broke some vases, dvds, and even tore one of my favorite shirts but we don't mind because we lover her. Without Trixie, our home will never be as fun as what it is now.

WWF Bird Stamps

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is an international non-governmental organization working on issues regarding the conservation, research and restoration of the environment. It is the world's largest independent conservation organization with over 5 million supporters worldwide, working in more than 100 countries, supporting around 1,300 conservation and environmental projects.

The group says its mission is "to halt and reverse the destruction of our environment".Currently, much of its work focuses on the conservation of three biomes that contain most of the world's biodiversity: forests, freshwater ecosystems, oceans and coasts. Among other issues, it is also concerned with endangered species, pollution and climate change.

Most countries have shown support to WWF by issuing stamps picturing every countries' endangered species. The postage stamps have served as an awareness and benefited the on going efforts to conserve wildlife.

Brazil WWF Bird Stamps

Fiji WWF Bird Stamps

Just this year (July 11, 2001), the post office of Fiji has issued 4 WFF stamps picturing Collared Lorry (Phigys solitarius).  These monotypic species of parrots are endemic to the islands of Fiji. The Fijian name for Collared Lorry is Kula.

Malawi WWF Bird Stamps

Love birds are one of my favorites but they are also one of the most exploited birds.  In coordination with WFF, the Malawi post office has issued last September 30, 2009 a set of stamps depicting Lilian's Lovebirds (Agapornis lilianae). The Lilian Lovebird is also know as Nyasa Lovebird and is the smallest parrot in the mainland Africa.

Cuba Bird Stamps

Hello there again! Im surprised today to find out I got a handful of duplicate stamps from Cuba particularly on the issue about Historia Latino Americana series. The set contains 16 stamps depicting birds and natives coming from 16 Latin American Countries. All are in used condition. Stamps were issued by the Cuba Post Office on October 12, 1987.

Fishes on Stamps Part 1

Hi! Just summer this year, I got the chance to visit Manila Ocean Park's Oceanarium. The park houses an array of 5000 marine creatures from around 300 species native in Asia. Seeing these creatures in real life was just so incredible. It was an amazing experience for an animal lover like me.

Of course I got some fishes on my stamp collections too. These Australian stamps below pictures lively sea creatures that have decorated the world's largest coral reef system, the Great Barrier Reef.

These fishes below arent sea fishes. These are fresh water fishes primitive in China and probably in some parts of Asia. One on the left is a Chinese Paddle fish, also known as Chinese swordfish. On the center is the Kaluga, claimed to be the largest fresh water fish in the world. Acipenser sinensis is known as the Chinese Sturgeon dominant in Yangtze and the Pearl rivers.

Chanos chanos is more know as Milkfish and is Philippines' national fish. Milkfish is infamous for being much bonier than other fishes and most of the time deboned when served.Both stamps issued in the Philippines on 1985 and 1995 respectively. They're not quite in good condition but I think it's just fine since it tells more story than a mint one.

This stamp from Hungary depicts a Colisa fasciata know in so many names:
Banded Gourami, Indian Giant Gourami, Rainbow Gourami, Striped Gourami.

This colorful fish in a Tanzanian stamp has few common names: Red Lyretail, Two-banded Killi, Twostripe Lyretail. This fresh water fish is mostly dominant in Ndian River in southwestern Cameroon, and appears restricted to the coastal plains either side of the border between Cameroon and Nigeria, including the Korup and Cross River National Parks.

Birds on Stamps Part 1

Hey there! Thanks for dropping by. I really had a hard time today looking for my scanned stamp collection. Just to let you know, today is the first time I have opened my stamps archive folder on my pc after more than a year. I have been away from stamp collecting for quite awhile and I just want to be back again. And it’s nice to be back again blogging, sorting and counting my stamps that I have been collecting for 5 years already.

These two stamps below are from Republic of Guinea-Bissau. These were issued on 1989 with 7 stamps in a set, unfortunately I got only 2 (Maroon-chested Ground Dove and Seychelles Blue Pigeon). If you have a complete set that you wanted to trade with please let me know. :)

This bird stamp below is from Haiti. I don’t have much info about this one.

Some of my favorite bird stamps from Jersey (short-toed treecreeper), Namibia (laughing dove), and Cuba (gorion amarillo).

Insects on Stamps Part1

Canada Beneficial InsectsInsects really looked disgusting and scary except for the butterflies of course. But one major fact is that some of these insects are rather useful and responsible for pollination, a nature's way of multiplying plants. This stamp sheet from Canada pictures beautiful insects that are beneficial to our nature. I got this sheet from Bibi Ali, a nice Canadian friend of mine.
 Czechoslovakia Insects

 











The Forest Caterpillar Hunter (Calosoma sycophanta), 3rd row 2nd stamp, is a large, bright green, metallic ground beetle that is native to Europe. In 1905 it was imported to New England for control of the Gypsy Moth.

Australian Insects
Coccinellidae is a family of beetles known for many names such as Ladybugs(North American English), ladybirds ((British English, Australian English, South African English)). Other lesser-used named includes ladyclock, lady cow, and lady fly.

The Fiddler Beetle (Eupoecila australasiae) also known as rose chafer is a member of the scarab beetle family from eastern Australia. Its common name is derived from its patterned body, reminiscent of a violin.


Romania Stamps of Insects







The Great Capricorn Beetle (Cerambyx cerdo), 1st stamp from left, is a species of beetle in family Cerambycidae.


Sweden
The Hermit Beetle (Osmoderma eremita) is a species of beetle in family Scarabaeidae. All over distribution range of these species has decreased due to habitat loss and fragmentation. European countries have given highest priority according to EU's Habitat Directive to protect these species.
